New study finds IPX usage on the rise

By Emily Jacobs

SAP has announced a rise in IPX usage among mobile operators.

A new study, ‘Navigating Complexity: The Quest for True IPX’, released by SAP in conjunction with TelecomAsia, revealed that 56 per cent of operators surveyed were connected to an IPX network, an increase from 30 per cent in 2011.

“We’re seeing the transformation of IPX from a network to interconnect mobile communications service providers into a cloud that hosts a wide range of stodtware defined services,” said Michael van Veen, business manager IPX, SAP Mobile Services.

“As LTE deployments continue, mobile operators are turning to IPX as a secure, private ecosystem for interconnections based on service hubs. With this approach, mobile operators have found they gain far shorter time-to-market, greater efficiency and long-term cost-savings.”

Over 200 LTE network deployments have occurred since 2010, as mobile IP traffic increases. Almost 80 per cent of mobile operators have deployed voice capabilities, while 45.5 per cent have deployed SMS services, 42 per cent video and 41 per cent GRX.

66.5 per cent of survey respondents noted that the assurance of a privately managed, cost-effective and secure network was the greatest benefit of IPX interconnections. Furthermore, 72 per cent reported that support for different commercial models or LTE roaming was significant. As a result, 34 per cent of mobile operators were commercially ready to release roaming services when they initially installed their LTE networks.
