Newmont Mining to implement SAP in Australian operations

By Eleanor Reader

Newmont Mining, the world’s second-largest gold producing mining firm, will implement a global SAP system in its Australian operations over the next two months.

The plans were revealed in a presentation Newmont made to SAP’s Mining & Metals Forum in Germany last Tuesday, which shows the scheme is actually part of a two-year SAP rollout called Project Pangaea.

The project officially started in October 2010 and will be completed in the firm’s projected two-year timeframe, with North America and Peru going live in April and July this year.

Now at the tail end of Project Pangaea, the final rollout will see Australia, New Zealand and Ghana going live in October and November of this year.

The firm, which has four gold mines in Western Australia and Northern Territory, has included all of its worldwide operation sites in the project, with the exception of Indonesia.

According to the presentation, the project was undertaken to regulate its global operations on SAP ERP, with hopes to establish consistent processes and data globally and to “create a foundation for Newmont’s global shared services strategy”.
