On the Move: new CIO at Defence

By Eleanor Reader

Dr Peter Lawrence has taken on the role of chief information officer (CIO) at the Department of Defence.

In November, Lawrence took over from outgoing Defence CIO Greg Farr, who served in the position for five years but did not seek another contract term.

Selected from a large field of public and private sector candidates, Dr Lawrence brings to the role over 20 years experience in planning, implementing and managing technology across a wide range of businesses and business functions on a local, regional and global basis.

Prior to his appointment with Defence, Dr Lawrence was the group manager IT, energy markets at Origin Energy.

In this role, he managed the delivery of technology services to the energy markets business through a shared services model that is largely outsourced to key partners.

Over his career Dr Lawrence has held a number of high profile roles, including CIO at ANZ National New Zealand, and positions at Shell Australia, Shell IT International and Shell Services International Japan.

Announcing the appointment last year, the Department of Defence acknowledged Farr’s “outstanding contribution to Defence’s ICT and business capability”.
