SAP joins Smart City Initiative

By Nathan Dukes

SAP is one of six global companies participating in a project to present a model for cutting edge technological and social systems.

The Smart City Project was launched late last year in Japan, where the project team will be based.

The key goals of the project are to reduce CO2 emissions through the promotion of renewable energy sources, and improve the quality life through improved traffic management, infrastructure networks and building design.

Of high importance to the project team is taking into account local conditions.

This has been put in place to cater for the ‘widely-diverse needs and restrictions, including different existing electricity infrastructures, climate conditions and political circumstances,’ the project report reads.

The alliance understands that concepts which may work well in Tokyo may not be applicable in Sydney or Melbourne for example.

The alliance aims to begin creating proposals for each part of the world from April this year, with each company contributing technology and data from their chosen field.

Involved in the project are SAP AG, Sharp, Nikken Sekkei, Hewlett-Packard Japan, Mitsui Fudosan and e-solutions.

SAP said in a press release they will contribute their knowledge of sustainability and their track record of assisting enterprise understand the sustainability objectives.

SAP also brings to the table their energy saving software for utilities providers.

‘SAP is helping energy companies transform their businesses as the industry shifts toward smart grid technology and greater energy efficiency. With this in mind, SAP is working to ensure that its applications integrate with energy infrastructures to enable the smart grid,’ a company announcement read.

The project team will also work closely with The University of Tokyo, in association with the Future Design Centre Inc., who are guiding the Smart City Project.
