SAP merges Hadoop and HANA in “big data” bundle

SAP AG has announced it will offer new packages that integrate Apache Hadoop software into real-time data warehousing environments with a new “big data” bundle.

The analytics bundle is based on SAP’s HANA in-memory database technology and combines the SAP Sybase IQ server, SAP Data Integrator software and SAP BusinessObjects business intelligence solutions.

The new packages, which are being offered through SAP partners Cloudera, Hitachi Data Systems, Hortonworks, HP and IBM, gives customers a newer and faster way to extract business value from massive datasets.

According to SAP, the new solution makes it much easier for customers to integrate Hadoop into their business analytic environments and refined data warehousing practices.

“Our goal is to help organisations build a high-performance enterprise data warehouse that combines the power of real-time insights with Hadoop processing frameworks,” said Steve Lucas, global executive vice president and general manager, database and technology for SAP.

“With new ‘big data’ offerings delivering information at unprecedented speeds, customers can uncover and harness new measurable signals from any data source for critical business insights.”

The packages enable customers to integrate Hadoop into their existing BI and data warehousing environments in multiple ways, giving customers the ability to tailor the integration to their needs, said SAP.

Organisations can use Data Integrator to read data from Hadoop Distributed File Systems (HDFS) or Hive databases and load relevant data into HANA or Sybase IQ, according to SAP. That means BI users can continue to use their existing reporting and analytics tools.

Customers can also run queries across Sybase IQ and Hadoop environments or Hadoop MapReduce jobs across Sybase IQ environments. The company added that BusinessObjects BI users can query Hive databases, which gives them the ability to directly explore Hadoop environments.
