SAP has opened its SAP Next Business and Technology Research Centre in Singapore.
Previously called SAP Research, the centre is the first of SAP’s refreshed research and development (R&D) operations to be opened across the world.
SAP currently has 21 research facilities worldwide, with this centre serving as the R&D headquarters in Asia-Pacific. The three other Asia-Pacific facilities are in Australia, China and India.
The country was picked to start the rebranding rollout because it is a strategic innovation hub that will allow SAP to extend its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. SAP said the availability of a plethora of top, local talent in Singapore was another guiding decision.
The centre currently has around 30 staff, with that number expected to triple by 2014.
Jason Yotopoulos, executive vice president and head of SAP Global Research and Business Incubation, said that innovation originating from the Asia-Pacific region is critical for SAP.
“We can’t simply take something from [the labs] in Europe and the United States and then apply that in Asia. There’s a unique texture of opportunities [in this region],” he said.
Yotopoulos revealed the centre will focus on four key areas: the real-time intelligent economy, which looks at data mining and analytics and sensor and machine data with SAP BusinessObjects and HANA; social business networks, with a focus on Ariba and SuccessFactors; the co-innovation lab, which allows SAP partners to collaborate and build on the companies technologies; and the SAP Global Business Incubator, which focuses on the company’s commitment to the start-up community in Singapore.
