SAP to employ people with autism as programmers

By Eleanor Reader

SAP wants people with autism to join their team as programmers and product testers.

The company has hired Danish recruitment company, Specialisterne, to help it find, train and manage employees diagnosed with autism.

People with autism bring a special set of skills to the table, said an SAP spokesperson, including a close attention to detail and the ability to solve complex problems.

Specialisterne chief executive, Steen Thygesen, said the partnership was its first with a multinational company.

“People with autism have some unique abilities to really focus on their task and stay focused for long periods of time. They are also good at spotting discrepancies in data,” said Thygesen, whose 14-year-old son has Asperger syndrome.

According to an SAP spokesman, the company aims to reflect the proportion of people diagnosed as autistic in society – about one per cent – within its 65,000-strong workforce.
