Australian IT job market to improve in 2015

By Freya Purnell
A lift in market confidence and large digital and security projects will drive up IT hiring in Australia this year, according to the Robert Walters 2015 Global Salary Survey.

Permanent salaries in IT are expected to grow by 1.6 per cent in 2015, with the highest growth rate expected in Melbourne, with a predicted 4.3 per cent increase, and the lowest in Perth, which is expected to decline by 0.2 per cent.

Peter Bateson, Sydney IT director, Robert Walters, said, “Salaries remained relatively constant in 2014, with premiums paid for niche skill sets, domain or industry-specific knowledge, and for those candidates able to communicate effectively at both a business and IT level. We predict that this will continue in 2015, while candidates with more generic skills sets may need to lower their salary expectations.”

One of the factors behind the improving conditions is a move away from offshoring by some banking and financial services organisations, which are instead bringing jobs back to Australia. However some large brands will continue to offshore certain functions, such as helpdesk, network and security operations.
