Demand for SAP grows in NZ energy sector

By Anne Widjaja

New Zealand electricity company, Top Energy, has become the latest in the sector to choose SAP, selecting SAP Business All-in-One to manage its businesses processes.

Top Energy will replace their Microsoft Navision software with the SAP solution, which will help the company manage their finance, logistics, enterprise asset management and project management processes.

Leading NZ SAP provider Soltius will act as implementation partner for Top Energy.

Russell Shaw, CEO, Top Energy Group, said that the decision to shift from a legacy system to SAP was necessary for the business to confidently “deliver the functionality required of a large asset-focused business”.

Shaw explained that the customisations and add-ons to the base ERP that Top Energy had implemented could not be appropriately controlled by their pre-existing legacy system.

“Implementing SAP will give us a fully integrated end-to-end solution, allowing us to retire the multiple smaller systems and customisations we presently have. Our strategic vision for Top Energy shows the need for IT systems that can handle significant growth and we are confident that SAP will support our ability to do this.”

Soltius has already had experience implementing SAP Business All-in-One for maintenance clients such as Connetics and Hamilton-based power distribution company WEL Networks.

Soltius director Jim Brodie said that SAP has become a popular choice in the New Zealand energy sector over the past five years. Brodie believes that this is because SAP ERP solutions have the ability to manage the wide range of activities relevant to energy businesses, from lines maintenance and contracting to new requirements such as smart metering.

“The demands being placed on these companies by rapid changes in their industry, such as fiber deployment, smart metering and next generation networks, means a single, integrated solution is essential.”
