New solutions from SAP to bring Internet of Things closer

By Nicholas Greene
SAP SE has announced it will release three new solutions to enable the Internet of Things (IoT): SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service; SAP Connected Logistics; and SAP Manufacturing Execution.

With these solutions, SAP plans to leverage the HANA Cloud Platform for both advanced capabilities such as complex event processing and in-memory computing, as well as application enablement.

SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service will assess both sensor and historic data to enable users to predict issues or errors before they occur, delivering deep insight by integrating both analytics and operations together on a single platform. This will help to reduce the negative profit impact on downtime. The AR Service Technican mobile app will also allow field techs to complete work orders automatically generated by the broader solution.

SAP Manufacturing Execution will allow the IoT to be enabled for manufacturing operations with results from real-time feeds via the HANA platform, while SAP Connected Logistics will allow hub operators to monitor traffic to and within a hub and engage communication between those involved, even if they have no pre-existing business relationship. It will also integrate backend transportation management systems and lean dispatching capabilities.

“The Internet of Things will be the key enabler of industry scenarios and of innovations in the digital economy,” said Bernd Leukert, member of the executive board of products and innovation, SAP SE.

“It is converging our digital and physical worlds, which will spur new products and services, and even change business models. The Internet of Things has the potential to dramatically improve responsiveness of businesses, re-imagine customer experience and open up new opportunities and brand new business models such as move from sell-to-service based models. SAP customers that have already implemented Internet of Things solutions have seen considerable improvement in asset utilisation and higher business process efficiency and helped address operational costs.”
