SAP merges HANA and the cloud

In a big announcement this week, SAP has taken the next step with its HANA phenomenon by launching SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud.

Through the service, running mission-critical SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse and new and unprecedented applications powered by SAP HANA will be possible as a managed cloud service with elastic petabyte scale, SAP stated.

Sikka admitted that cloud computing is typically used for simple applications, not mission-critical applications, so it was important for SAP to make sure the benefits of the cloud came at no compromise to its customers.

“For a little bit more than two years, we’ve been working on how can be bring the power of HANA into the world of the cloud,” said Vishal Sikka, member of the Executive Board of SAP AG and the Global Managing Board, heading technology and innovation, SAP.

Sikka said early responses to the new offering have been much better than expected, with the company currently working with dozens of customers.

“I expected a dozen to showcase and a handful would be live, but the interest kept rising. Last week we were at 47, earlier today I found out our number has gone up to 60,” he said on Wednesday.

The service is currently only available directly from SAP, however according to Sikka the company sees an opportunity to make SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud available via partners over time.

SAP announced its plans to implement an open ecosystem strategy with its managed service providers to offer the capabilities of SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud from their data centres, as well as from multiple SAP data centres worldwide.

Details on this initiative, use cases and partners will be revealed at SAPPHIRE NOW, being held 14-16 May in Orlando, Florida, said Sikka.
