The SAP Supervisory Board, synonymous with tech innovation and strategic business decisions, is entering a new era. The Board of SAP SE has proposed the candidacy of Pekka Ala-Pietilä, a figure well-recognized in Europe’s innovation and technology sector, for a two-year term as a new member. The Board has further earmarked him as the likely successor to the widely respected Chairman, Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner.

SAP SE stands as one of the most well-known and respected entities in the computer software industry, with a global presence. Overseeing the operations of this conglomerate is a formidable responsibility that lies with the SAP Supervisory Board. From strategic decision-making to monitoring executive actions, the Board effectively dictates the course of SAP’s growth and has been instrumental in making it a global leader in business software. Since its inception, SAP has been capably guided by seasoned technocrats and industry experts, with Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner at the helm for almost two decades.

A Change in Leadership: Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner’s Incredible Tenure

Since assuming the position of Chairman in 2003, Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner has been instrumental in guiding SAP’s course, nurturing the company along its journey, and leading it towards continued successes. Under his insightful leadership, SAP has made immense strides in the software industry. Filling his shoes is no small task. However, the proposed successor, Ala-Pietilä, is no stranger to occupying significant roles in the tech industry.

Simultaneously, having initially selected Punit Renjen as the successor for the chair, diverging perspectives on the Board’s role led to a mutual agreement for Renjen to step down from the SAP Supervisory Board. This decision will take effect from the end of the Annual General Meeting on May 15, 2024, paving the way for fresh leadership.

Pekka Ala-Pietilä, aged 67, already has an impressive record in the tech world. A former President of the Nokia Corporation between 1999 and 2005, he was also part of the SAP Supervisory Board from 2002 to 2021. His experience extends to being Chairman of the EU Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence from 2018-2020 and chair of Finland’s Artificial Intelligence Programme from 2017-2019.

Further bolstering his credentials, Ala-Pietilä currently holds positions on numerous European corporate boards, including holding the chair of the Supervisory Board of HERE Technologies, a Dutch multinational location intelligence company. This combined wealth of experience, strategic vision, and a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of the tech industry and European SE governance positions him as a formidable candidate for the role of SAP Supervisory Board Chairman.

A Significant Transition in the SAP Supervisory Board

Prof. Dr. Plattner has expressed confidence in Ala-Pietilä’s ability to lead SAP into its future, appreciating his steady support during SAP’s pivotal moments and recognizing his profound understanding of the industry. Despite the changes, gratitude lies with the outgoing Chair, Punit Renjen, for his tireless dedication and significant contributions to SAP.

Ala-Pietilä has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to rejoin this European technology leader at a time of such importance. He notes the work of the talented individuals at SAP, who have positioned the company at the forefront of global enterprise technology over the past 50 years. As the company continues to pioneer the development and deployment of Business Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ala-Pietilä looks forward to contributing to SAP’s record of delivering transformative technology that brings meaningful results.

As the SAP Supervisory Board prepares for this transition, it carries the hopes and expectations of its stakeholders. The story of Ala-Pietilä’s tenure will unfold in the years to come, but one thing is certain: the future promises exciting times for the SAP Supervisory Board as it embraces this new chapter in its journey.
