SAP Work Manager versus Asset Manager – here are the benefits!

What is the SAP Asset Manager?

SAP Asset Manager is a mobile-native iOS and Android application developed by SAP SE which helps to ensure that maintenance processes run without unnecessary complexity. The solution assists maintenance technicians in executing their tasks using a modern mobile application instead of outdated paper-based methods. With the mobile app, you can record the hours spent on each maintenance operation or attach a photo of a defect on the spot.

We have been using the SAP Work Manager solution for several years. What are the benefits of moving to the SAP Asset Manager?

When it was introduced, SAP Work Manager was among the best mobile applications for asset management on the market. With new technologies advancing, SAP introduced the SAP Asset Manager as the most recent version of this product with a sharper focus on cloud-based solutions and user experience.

From the users’ point of view, technicians will get a modern user-friendly interface with native features such as logging in with Touch or Face ID. Such simple technology significantly improves the user experience, reduces the complexity and time spent on mobile devices and leverages the focus on the maintenance tasks.

From a technical perspective, the SAP Asset Manager is a cloud-based solution, therefore your IT team does not have to support the local SMP server. SAP Asset Manager also supports features like SSO and better synchronises performance; this increases the functional feature disparity between both products making Asset Manager the better choice.

It’s also worth mentioning that SAP Work Manager doesn’t support integration with the latest SAP solutions such as Asset Strategy and Performance Management (ASPM). Hence, if you’re planning to use the ASPM checklists for regular inspections of your equipment, the SAP Asset Manager is the right choice.

Can we use the SAP Asset Manager if our company hasn’t moved from SAP ECC to S/4HANA?

SAP Asset Manager is fully integrable and compatible with the SAP ECC and the SAP S/4HANA systems, so there is no need to wait for an upgrade.

Can we use a signature in the SAP Asset Manager to go paperless and avoid printing documents to sign them?

For many companies, especially those in regulated sectors, capturing a signature is an essential part of the maintenance process. With SAP Asset Manager version 2105 a digital signature is available to sign completed work orders, operations and confirmations. With an authenticator application, the user will be able to perform mandatory authentications using time-based one-time passcodes, and the information will be captured on the S/4HANA system as digital signature records.

If the digital signature is not an option, you can use the image capture which allows a technician to sign with a finger or a stylus directly on the screen of the device. The signature is saved as an attachment to the order and send to the backend system with the next synchronisation.

Our assets are geographically distributed across the state. Can the SAP Asset Manager be integrated with GIS systems?

When your critical assets are not in one place, it can be helpful to use an interactive map capturing all equipment, failures, and other jobs. SAP Asset Manager can be integrated with geographic information systems (GIS), so technicians can see all necessary maintenance-related data and plan their routes in a single app.

Our maintenance team often works in areas with poor internet/network connections. Would it be a problem?

SAP Asset Manager is designed for full use offline. Even if the device is not connected to the network you can perform most functions to execute the work (except those which require connection to the internet such as push notifications). You must execute the initial synchronization to get all your tasks (can be done at the beginning of the shift) and sync again when the work is done.
