SAP Australia has opened a SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service in Canberra, with the Australian Government Shared Services Centre becoming the service’s first customer.

The service is designed specifically to support Australian Federal Government Agencies, and has been established in the Canberra Data Centre with SAP Premium Supplier partner Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).

The Shared Services Centre of the Department of Employment and the Department of Education and Training  – currently the only dedicated shared services provider in the Australian Public Service – is utilising the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud to reduce costs and increase efficiencies across a range of back office activities such as payroll processing and financial services.

This investment is Canberra is part of SAP’s global strategy to provide full security and regional data compliance for all customers wishing to move applications to the cloud. It also build on SAP’s cloud provisioning footprint in Australia, which includes the existing SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud data centre in Sydney, which opened in April 2014.

SAP Australia’s executive general manager for public services, Damien Bueno, said: “SAP is committed to scaling the unique capabilities we deliver to our public sector customers, such as the Shared Services Centre. With a secure onshore cloud platform, built on leading-edge infrastructure, we believe all tiers of government can realise their capacity for digital innovation.

“The new Canberra facility also addresses the requirements of many Australian Federal agencies that are eager to apply the real-time capabilities of in-memory computing in the cloud, but have concerns about hosting data offshore.”

The SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service provides customers with access to the real-time capabilities of the SAP HANA in-memory platform, in a private, fully managed cloud and with subscription-based pricing. Customers can also run workloads such as the S/4HANA suite of applications.

HPE has designed and built an infrastructure solution within the Canberra Data Centre which integrates compute, storage and networking resources, and HPE Software, managed by HPE’s Critical Watch Centre.

“We are dedicated to providing a technologically advanced, low-risk solution to Australian businesses that leverages the significant R&D HPE has committed to the SAP platform,” said Alan Hyde, vice president and general manager, enterprise group, HPE South Pacific.

“HPE’s Converged Systems for SAP HANA, together with HPE Datacenter Care Services, provide a complete managed cloud environment to SAP customers, helping Australian enterprises effectively manage sophisticated SAP HANA workloads in real-time.”

This latest development is a continuation of SAP’s strong focus on the public sector in Australia, having opened its Institute for Digital Government in Canberra in October last year.
