The SAP and Google Cloud partnership is a strong example of how two leading technology companies can come together to help customers achieve their business goals. The partnership has already helped thousands of customers accelerate their digital transformation journeys, and it is expected to continue to grow in the years to come.

SAP and Google Cloud have been partners since 2017 when they announced a strategic alliance to help customers accelerate their digital transformation journeys. The partnership has since grown to include a wide range of joint offerings and initiatives, all focused on helping customers get the most out of their SAP and Google Cloud investments.

In recent years, the two tech giants continued to expand their partnership, announcing a number of new initiatives and collaborations. These included:

  • The launch of a new joint solution for the retail industry, which combines SAP’s industry expertise with Google Cloud’s technology to help retailers improve their customer experience and operations.
  • An expansion of the RISE with SAP program to include new services and support for customers who are migrating to the German software giant’s complete enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, SAP S/4HANA on Google Cloud.
  • Several SAP products and services were made available on Google Cloud’s infrastructure and network, including SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, and SAP Analytics Cloud solutions.
  • Native integrations between Google Workspace — which brings together Google’s apps into a single integrated workspace — and SAP S/4HANA Cloud in order to enable customers’ innovation in the cloud.

This year, SAP and Google Cloud declared that they were broadening their collaboration by introducing an open data service. This service was designed to make managing business data simpler and more powerful. By combining SAP’s Datasphere solution with Google’s data cloud, customers could create a comprehensive data cloud that integrated data from all areas of their organization. This integration also allowed businesses to see their complete data ecosystem in real time and optimize their investments in Google Cloud and SAP software.

Commenting on the latest industry development, SAP Chief Executive Officer and Executive Board Member Christian Klein said in a statement:

“Bringing together SAP systems and data with Google’s data cloud introduces entirely new opportunities for enterprises to derive more value from their full data footprints. SAP and Google Cloud share a commitment to open data and our extended partnership will help break down barriers between data stored in disparate systems, databases, and environments. Our customers not only benefit from the business AI already built into our systems, but also from a unified data foundation.”

SAP and Google Cloud Collaborate on New Open Data Offering

Data plays a crucial role in digital transformation and the advancement of artificial intelligence. To fully benefit from their data investments, organizations often devote significant resources to create intricate data integrations, customized analytics engines, and generative artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) models. Among all the data sources, SAP systems’ data holds paramount importance as it often contains essential information related to supply chain management, financial projections, HR records, omnichannel retail, and other critical aspects of the organization.

By utilizing SAP Datasphere, organizations can also merge essential data with information from various sources across the enterprise. This integration is possible, irrespective of the data’s origin. This enables organizations to seamlessly combine data from SAP software and other non-SAP sources on Google Cloud, which, in turn, accelerates their digital transformation. With a clearly-defined data foundation that retains a complete business context, organizations can also gain a significant advantage in their digital journey.

Noting that the two tech giants now deliver an “incredibly comprehensive” and open data cloud, Google Cloud Chief Executive Officer Thomas Kurian said that this provides a foundation for the future of enterprise AI. He further added:

“Few resources are as important to digital transformation as data. By deeply integrating SAP data and systems with our data cloud, customers will be able to utilize our analytics capabilities, as well as advanced AI tools and large language models to find new insights from their data.”

With the integration of SAP Datasphere and Google Cloud BigQuery, organizations can federate queries across SAP and non-SAP software, creating a comprehensive view of their most important data on Google’s data cloud. Customers can utilize Google Cloud’s advanced AI and ML models to train models on data from SAP and non-SAP systems. Moreover, SAP and Google Cloud are exploring ways to combine SAP Datasphere with broader ESG data sets and insights powered by Google Cloud to accelerate sustainability journeys with actionable insights. The launch of this joint offering will allow organizations to perform advanced analysis and plan with a single, comprehensive view of their businesses.
