SAP, BearingPoint to Drive Corporate Environmental Sustainability

For many years now, SAP has been bringing corporate environmental sustainability at the forefront of its operations as well as its customers’ business practices by developing products and services that help them realise zero emissions, zero waste, and zero inequality.

In an article written by Thomas Saueressig, member of the Executive Board of SAP, SAP Product Engineering, S&P Trucost Limited data and S&P Global ESG Scores for 2021 reported that SAP customers that have adopted technologies from the tech multinational achieved an average of 75{8bf2b29f36318f0ac46ab1cc03d7035abce669a1cea16c9ed62389a818fa22fd} improvement on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) scores versus industry peers and produced 24{8bf2b29f36318f0ac46ab1cc03d7035abce669a1cea16c9ed62389a818fa22fd} fewer carbon emissions than the market average. As a provider of solutions that offer industry-specific sustainability features, SAP launched SAP Product Footprint Management, SAP Responsible Design and Production, and SAP Sustainability Control Tower last year to help organisations become intelligent, sustainable enterprises.

Further to the company’s sustainability initiatives and in keeping its promise to help the world run better and improve people’s lives, SAP works with like-minded and equally-committed partners and customers to build a sustainable future. In Japan, SAP has partnered with Sustainable Lab Inc., an AI group that creates a database of corporate environmental and social contributions, to develop a service to support the realisation of “true corporate value”, in which non-financial values such as ESG and SDGs are given much emphasis.

Accelerating Corporate Environmental Sustainability

Most recently, SAP, a Terra Carta Seal recipient, has allied with emission calculations expert BearingPoint to develop corporate environmental sustainability solutions, which includes expanding the SAP Product Footprint Management solution. The innovation partnership is centred on developing intelligent solutions to help bring companies closer to achieving zero CO2 emissions.

“The co-development partnership between SAP and BearingPoint will bring together two strong value propositions. BearingPoint has long experience helping customers identify carbon reduction potentials and achieve sustainability targets. SAP contributes innovation capabilities, broad system landscape, and reach to customers. Together as partners, we will push the limits to move the economy forward on the path to zero emissions,” said Gunther Rothermel, SVP, Head of SAP S/4HANA Sustainability, SAP.

Donald Wachs, Head of IP Assets, BearingPoint, and Member of the BearingPoint Management Committee, explained that the Amsterdam-headquartered management consulting firm will co-innovate with SAP leveraging BearingPoint’s IP asset in designing a unique solution to help organisations measure and optimise the products climate impact across the entire lifecycle. He added:

“SAP Product Footprint Management has sophisticated capabilities to determine the carbon footprint of a single product. Our 10-years-plus proven industry experience in calculating and optimising product and corporate CO2 footprints will enable our joint customers to meet their decarbonization targets. We at BearingPoint believe that together with SAP’s innovative solutions, depth in commercial processes, and market expertise we can make a positive impact on the climate.”

The sustainability partnership intends to harness the two companies’ competencies– BearingPoint for product and corporate footprint calculations and algorithms and SAP’s Product Footprint Management solution for data gathering and calculations to help organisations assess the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 3 emissions, which are all indirect emissions from the value chain. Unlike Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which most companies have already addressed, assessing Scope 3 emissions require data exchange between partners like auditors and governments that are using varying IT systems, which the SAP solution can fulfill. Aside from fully integrating with SAP S/4HANA and the intelligent enterprise architecture, the SAP Product Footprint Management solution also works with other data sources allowing delivery of automated assessments of footprints across the value chain, regardless of system landscapes.

Peter Maier, President, Industries and Customer Advisory, SAP, stated:

“The partnership with BearingPoint accelerates the SAP Product Footprint Management solution road map and will help make us a market leader in product footprint solutions that support our customers in maximising the sustainability of their products and services.”
