SAP has joined forces with Verizon and Hitachi to help customers transform their manufacturing businesses and accelerate the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. By extending the capabilities of SAP manufacturing solutions with Verizon’s 5G and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), the collaboration aims to speed up customer transition from innovation to implementation.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic forcing organisations in the manufacturing industry to transform, leveraging partnerships to support their transition to Industry 4.0 will be key. With 77% of the world’s transactions touching on SAP systems, the tech giant is well equipped to address the production challenges facing the sector. By bringing intelligence and automation to the entire manufacturing process, SAP connects every link in the customer’s supply chain to the intelligent enterprise.

Rusty Baldwin, Global Solution Manager for the SAP Manufacturing Suite (ME) and the Digital Manufacturing Cloud for Execution at SAP, shared that the way solutions have shifted to support COVID-19 requirements is evidence of how flexible technology can be. He said in a blog post:

“More than ever, manufacturers need access to digital technologies that enable the gathering and analysis of data across machines and business systems to drive business value.”

In an online event sponsored by SAP titled ‘Bring Real-time Solutions to Industry 4.NOW’, Baldwin expounded on SAP’s collaboration with Verizon and Hitachi. He participated in the webinar along with Arleen Cauchi, Managing Director of GTM at Verizon, and Jack Roman, VP of Hitachi’s SAP Practice. They explained how SAP and Verizon’s 5G Edge solutions, powered by Hitachi, extend the SAP Digital Supply Chain and SAP Manufacturing portfolios with 5G and real-time edge capabilities.

“Our joint solutions not only integrates SAP Edge Services deployed on the Verizon MEC but connects the SAP S/4HANA and SAP Digital Supply Chain Manufacturing Suite,” Baldwin said.

Extending the Capabilities of SAP Manufacturing and Digital Supply Chain Solutions

In a co-creation effort, SAP, Verizon, and Hitachi are developing pre-integrated products and new digital technologies to tackle complex problems of manufacturing companies with transformative, real-time Industry 4.0 solutions. SAP’s expanded strategic partnership with Verizon focuses on creating solutions for the manufacturing sector by looking at how 5G and edge computing can transform digital supply chains within retail stores, distribution warehouses, factory floors, and fulfillment centers.

During the discussion, Cauchi said that the collaboration will accelerate customers’ ability to move from ideation and innovation to implementation. With Verizon’s 5G and MEC offering, manufacturers will be able to benefit from end-to-end solutions that seamlessly integrate with SAP Suite and leverage real-time analytics running on the edge. The solution will also result in mobility and connected services, service deployment and energy efficiency, advanced speed and throughput, and low latency and high reliability.

Moreover, the partnership is completed by global manufacturer Hitachi Vantara. Having led most of the shop floor digital transformations across its conglomerate over the past two decades, Hitachi will also bring in an extensive experience that reassures customers of access to insights from the firm’s journey to Industry 4.0. Roman stated:

“We help companies take technology from SAP, from Verizon, and put it into practice. One of the most important tasks of that, perhaps the most important initially, is to create business value.”

Furthermore, the integrated solution enables real-time monitoring and instant control of machines and processes by leveraging the SAP Business Technology Platform. It will also open new use cases in predictive analytics, predictive quality, and autonomous guided vehicles.

“These new technologies allow companies to solve problems in real-time for things like digitising your end-to-end supply chain, taking care of health and safety, taking it from compliance, and reporting to proactively monitoring what is happening in real-time,” Roman explained.
