Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband service is now live at SAP Labs in Palo Alto, California. The move is part of Verizon and SAP’s expanded strategic partnership to develop and test 5G and edge computing solutions.

Verizon and SAP’s expanded partnership aims to bring concrete business innovations across various industries using 5G technology in order to provide end-to-end visibility and deliver operational efficiencies.

Max Wessel, Chief Learning Officer at SAP, and Managing Director at SAP Labs comments:

“As the world’s largest provider of enterprise application software, we’re on a never-ending quest to bring information to decision-makers at the speed of thought. By connecting SAP Business Technology Platform with Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, we’re confident that customers across industries can achieve impact through innovation.”

5G at SAP Labs in Palo Alto

With Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband, SAP Labs in Palo Alto will be better equipped in conducting rapid prototyping and testing of innovative concepts. This also provides the opportunity to showcase demos to SAP customers, allowing them to trial solutions before deploying them in their own environments.

The two companies will initially focus on creating solutions for the manufacturing industry by testing “how 5G and edge compute can transform digital supply chains on factory floors, fulfillment centers, distribution warehouses, and within retail stores.” Target use cases include:

  • retail stocking compliance
  • shelf layout compliance
  • predictive quality
  • predictive maintenance

According to a report, the 5G Ultra Wideband deployment at SAP Labs strengthens the Verizon Business strategy of taking its own methods and technologies to partners for expanded scale and impact.

A Collaboration Between Innovators

Verizon and SAP have a solid foundation of partnership that’s been built over several years. Verizon leverages several SAP solutions, including SAP S/4HANA Finance, SAP Cloud Platform, SAP Digital Boardroom, and SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud. SAP, on the other hand, leverages Verizon to consolidate and streamline its global network infrastructure for easier and more cost-effective network management, improved internal connectivity and collaboration, provide a secure platform to support customer-facing applications, and a better experience for employees and customers.

The companies have also been collaborating since 2019 to create enterprise solutions using Verizon’s network and platform capabilities integrated with SAP software and services, specifically those that provide end-to-end visibility across the digital supply chain such as the SAP Leonardo Internet of Things (IoT) solution, SAP Edge Services and analytics, computing and data management capabilities.

According to Verizon and SAP, they are uniquely positioned to unlock new business models and monetization strategies that will enable SAP customers to fast-track their digital transformations and journey into becoming Intelligent Enterprises. Together, Verizon and SAP aim to develop next-generation IoT analytics solutions and drive a new class of data analytics, enterprise management and services at scale.
