A consortium of US hospitals and health systems is gaining a unified view of their patients and uncovering valuable health insights in real time, by using SAP HANA to manage their big data.
“Healthcare provider organisations are struggling to achieve the timely, end-to-end visibility across service lines required to succeed in the era of value-based care,” said Dr David Delaney, chief medical officer, healthcare at SAP.
“It has been rewarding to work with consortium members to overcome these challenges by leveraging the speed and agility of the in-memory computing platform of SAP HANA to dramatically simplify integrating, consuming and analysing disparate, complex data sets. The resulting insights are leading to improved care and greater efficiencies for member organisations.”
SAP HANA provides multiple benefits to healthcare providers, including significant cost savings, increased operational efficiencies, decreased error rates and overall improvements in patient diagnosis and treatment.
The first members of the consortium to use the platform were Mercy, with 45 acute care and specialty hospitals; Parkland Health & Hospital System, with 20 community-based clinics, 12 school-based clinics and numerous outreach and education programs; and Sutter Health, a not-for-profit health system with more than 5000 affiliated physicians. Within a year, more than 40 healthcare providers have joined the consortium.
Some of the reported health industry-specific benefits include point-of-service operational analytics for high-risk disease cohorts; enterprise-wide analytics to facilitate readmission risk management, capacity planning and medication adherence; clinical and genomic analytics to enable precision medicine and clinical translational research; and tools to enable personalised health engagement, collaboration and compliance.
