One of the most amazing benefits of being part of a community like the SAP Australian User Group (SAUG) is access to the experiences and innovation of companies from all industries and of varying scales. While there is enormous value to be had from learning about other companies in your sector, we encourage our members to explore what ‘out of sector’ innovation may be relevant to them. Many of our members have recently undertaken incredibly complex SAP projects and can provide valuable insights and experiences for others in the SAP space. Here are just a few examples that will be profiled at SAUG Summit Online2020:
The Department of Communities & Justice was formed in July 2019 due to a merger of two former agencies into a single NSW Government agency comprising 27,500 employees. With multiple, poorly integrated systems, the new Agency needed to modernise its HR processes and systems. They did this by consolidating two separate SAP SuccessFactors environments and merging the configuration into a single system. This was done at the same time that the NSW Government was implementing a whole of Government ERP deployment with one central focus being customer and user experience. As you can imagine, a project of this scale and complexity threw up numerous challenges. However, the project was a success, bringing increased productivity, improved reporting and an improvement in hiring and HR processes.
TasNetworks is a Tasmanian Government, State owned company responsible for electricity transmission and distribution throughout Tasmania. Like all utilities organisations there is an abundance of data available for use and interpretation. Until recently, TasNetworks has operated with manual data loading, had little end-user reporting; and had to deal with a multitude of issues around data quality, data governance and ‘single source of truth’ issues. Fast forward to 2020 and TasNetworks has successfully completed the implementation of an SAP Business Warehouse (BW) on SAP HANA (BW/HANA) and began utilising SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) including self-service reporting. A project of this size and scope will always have challenges and this was no exception with end-user change management, training and change of mindset being key factors. The upside however has been the improved end-user access to data and insights, reduced costs and time to data, the ability to build self-managed reporting dashboards for business users and a single source of truth.
BHP is the world’s largest mining company based on market capitalisation and has been around since 1851. It has a workforce of more than 72,000 employees and contractors working across 90 locations worldwide. It’s hard to believe then (or maybe not), that a company of this size could operate its workforce planning process based on numerous inefficient Excel-based spreadsheets. And yet this was the case until recently. BHP has implemented a new workforce planning system using SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC). This solution pulls together information directly from the central HR system. There were clear benefits including accurate, up-to-date and safe data; the ability to make more informed decisions with a new level of transparency and velocity and the ability to give line users access to readily available information and insights.
