New S/4HANA Client Copy Tool: 10 Key Points

With S/4HANA 1909, a new client copy tool has just been introduced which offers a number of benefits as outlined below. We think our SAP-certified Client Sync™ brings you additional value-adds, which we explain below.

Ten things you need to know: the new tool 

1. Is faster than the existing client copy tool: it uses direct data copy on the HANA DB Level, and table splitting to copy larger tables. Local copying is 10x faster, and remote copying 5x faster.
2. Has a new architecture for automation: run from client 000 (not the target client)
3. Offers better logging and task management: no more file system logs; everything is better organised. Improved task management – uses SAP ABAP task management for logical steps and progress tracking. Provides the ability to export log for support purposes.
4. Offers a client comparison tool to identify table differences for local and remote comparison (using RFCs) – offers two types of comparison (detailed and checksum-based).
5. Offers ability to copy selected tables only: move selected tables only to the target system.
6. Is available for on-premise customers from S/4HANA 1909; the old client copy tool will be deprecated at some point in the future (right now that’s still the one in the SAP Menu).
7. Allows optional source system locking: offers the ability to leave the source system “unlocked.”
8. Offers better exception management: better control error management and provide detailed log and execution reporting
9. Source client can be exported once and used for multiple target systems (SCC8N  – Export of a client to a transport, SCC7N – Import of post-processing)
10. Gives the ability to determine target client size tool showing: size of the entire client; individual table sizes and available HANA Database Space and Memory.

Three things that differentiate Client Sync from the standard tool:

1. Ability to scramble sensitive data at source when copying to test clients
2. Ability to take a time or enterprise slice (e.g. only specific company codes) of client data to make the target system smaller
3. User interface and ease of use. The Client Sync process is easier to follow and repeat periodically.
